Description:
The Circuit des Remparts in Angoulême (Charente) is one of the headline events in the Poitou Charentes, and it gets underway this weekend.
Started back in 1939, and revived again in 1978, this classic car racing event is a real spectacle, and it’s not just for petrol-heads. All weekend there are exhibitions in the streets nearby to the circuit, and there is always a great atmosphere.
Festivities get underway on Friday 16 Sept, with the Concours d'Elégance, with a procession of stunning cars along the Champ de Mars esplanade from 8.45pm. Saturday sees the International Rally de Charente setting off from Chais Magelis from 8.30am, with the cars returning to the Champ de Mars Esplanade from 4.45pm. The real racing however takes place on Sunday afternoon around the remparts from 2pm, although there will be a series of practice laps and exhibition laps all morning from 8am.
We wrote a blog about our experience of the event in 2008, and if you want an idea of what we thought you can read it here. Why not make a day of it on Sunday, take lunch at one of the many excellent restaurants in this part of town, and enjoy an afternoon of entertainment? Admission is from 20€, and tickets can normally be bought from one of the kiosks in the centre of town on the day.
For all the details, check out the official website which is available in English. The event takes place this weekend on 16, 17 and 18 September.
