Description:
Production of 100% green electricity became a reality on Thursday, when the BIOGAS facility in Vigeant, Vienne was put into service.
The 2 million euro project is the result of a partnership between Séché Environnement and Sergies, the local public/private sector partnership. The Vigeant facility will have an output of 2.8kW from the outset, but this could be boosted in future with the addition of a further generator.
BIOGAS effectively harnesses the methane gas that develops in household waste, and converts it into electricity. Rubbish is stored, macerated and fermented in huge wells, and the gas is used to power two turbine generators. This factory, which will operate 365 days a year and 24 hours a day, is capable of providing power to 11,000 people.
Séché Environnement has a background in waste treatment and energy extraction from waste, and Poitiers based Sergies has long been involved in developing electricity generation and distribution, and is active in the production of renewable energies. Sergies is 80% owned by an association of local authorities in the Vienne, and is actively involved in other renewable energy projects such as wind turbines and landfill gas.
