Description:
If nothing is done to save it, the Coubre lighthouse near Royan (Charente Maritime) could disappear in seven years, according to France 3.
Coastal erosion is gradually nibbling away the dunes around the 60m tall building, and experts believe the end could come as early as 2017. When it was built in 1905, there was 1600m separating it from the Atlantic Ocean, but today it is just 160m from the crashing waves.
The landmark currently opens for visitors in summer, offering panoramic views over the Côte Sauvage, Bonne Anse bay and out towards nearby La Palmyre.
