Description:
The Daily Telegraph reported on Friday that a surgeon from the University Hospital in Poitiers had been called in to operate on a 150 pound gorilla, after it sustained a crippling injury falling from a tree at La Vallée des Singes.
Louis-Etienne Gayet, an orthopaedic surgeon at the University Hospital Centre in Poitiers, had been called in by vets after eight-year-old Kwanza snapped her thighbone in a fall at the animal park in Romagne, Vienne.
The injury was difficult to treat, because of the close proximity of the break to the hip, but Dr Gayet was able to fit a metal plate during a three-hour operation last week. Kwanza is now able to crawl, but it could take another six weeks before the success of the procedure can be confirmed.
Kwanza was due to be transferred to Belfast Zoo at the end of August, but she will remain in Romagne until she has fully recovered.
