After the euphoria of promotion to the Top 14 of French rugby, La Rochelle continued their good form with an opening day victory over Castres at Stade Marcel Deflandre on Saturday night.

Tries from Sebastien Boboul and Benjamin Ferrou meant that the home side went into the break 12-3 ahead.  A try from Iosefa Tekori hauled the visitors back into the match in the second half, before Norman Ligiari restored La Rochelle’s lead with a further try.

A late try from Cameron McIntyre of Castres set up a tense finish, but La Rochelle held on for a famous and unlikely victory.  Castres finished fifth top of the league last season, and were strongly backed to win this opening match of the 2010/11 season.

Next up for La Rochelle is a daunting trip to the mighty Stade Francais next Friday 20 August.
