Description:
An ambitious project by the department of Charente to build around 5,000km of cycle routes, came a step closer to fruition this week, as five new circuits were opened.
37 routes will be built in total as part of the Charente Vélo project, offering terrific facilities for keen cyclists as well as giving visitors a new way of exploring the area. The project started in 2004, and so far 24 routes have been completed. The first routes were opened in 2007, with circuits established at Reignac and Rouillac.
The five new circuits are at Mansle, Saint-Angeau, Montignac, Ruffec and Villefagnan, and the official inauguration took place on 3 July at the Mansle start line. In all, the 37 circuits created by the project will pass through almost 340 separate communes. There are three categories of circuit being built, a family circuit (5km to 10km), a discovery circuit (20km to 35km) and an exploration circuit (40km to 60km).
Circuits are available at the following places in Charente:
Aigre, Brossac, Châteauneuf, Cognac, Jarnac, Montbron, Rouillac, Segonzac, Vindelle, Champagne-Mouton, Chassenon, Confolens, Massignac, Reignac, Roumazières, Ruffec, Brigueuil, Exideuil-Manot, Mansle, Montignac, Villefagnan, Saint-Angeau.
