Due to the Icelandic volcanic eruption flights from the UK to France are delayed or cancelled today, airport officials say the ash cloud represents a very serious risk to aircraft
Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh airports were shut first as The Air Traffic Control Service (NATS) said it was restricting flights "in accordance with international civil aviation policy". The problem then spread to Liverpool, Birmingham, Manchester and Newcastle.
The Met Office warned NATS that the tiny particles of rock, glass and sand contained in the ash cloud would be sufficient to jam aircraft engines.
It has now been confirmed that no flights will be allowed out of or into the UK from 12.00 (noon) until 6pm (UK time) after which the situation will be reassessed.
All passengers are being advised to contact their airlines prior to travel, a full refund of the flight or a free transfer to another flight should be available.
This is the 2nd eruption in less than a month under a glacier in the Eyjafjallajoekull area of Iceland. Experts say the volcano is still erupting.
