Description:
Oysters farmed in Charente Maritime are set to get the all clear for public consumption during the coming week, after a second round of tests for toxins reported back a clean bill of health.
Whilst a formal declaration is needed from the prefecture, France 3 report that the first clear test came back on 2 April, and a second test carried out today came back clear. However, restrictions on oysters from the north of Ile de Re will remain in place for the time being.
The sale and consumption of shellfish (in the main oysters) from the waters of Charente Maritime had been banned since 20 March, after high levels of toxins were found during routine testing by authorities. It is thought that waters had become polluted following storm Xynthia, with agricultural land being flooded and the receding waters taking newly spread fertiliser back into the sea.
The prefecture is expected to give the all clear in a declaration during the middle of next week.
