Charente Maritime Residents to Pay for Storm Xynthia

06 April 2010

Description:

The Charente Maritime president Dominique Bussereau is having a meeting with councilors to discuss a storm solidarity tax which could see local taxes rise by up to 6% this year to pay for the repairs caused by Storm Xynthia.

It is believed the increase could raise an €8.2m for the department, Charente Maritime was one of the most-hit by the storms and flooding at the end of February.

If it go's ahead the increase would apply to residential taxes - taxe foncière  and taxe d'habitation and the local business taxes due to replace the taxe professionnelle.

Also this week the Charente-Maritime and Vendee préfectures are set to announce the demolition  of between 1,200 and 1,500 homes in flooding zones.   Homeowners will receive the full of the cost of their property, this will be made up from a combination of the state and insurance funds, the total cost is to be in the region of €200m.
