The Times says that the Nationwide Building Society plans to ‘weed out’ customers who do not use their account as their main current account, and for those people who don’t it will mean the removal of the free cash withdrawals in Europe.

From June, Flex-Account holders who have a cash card (as opposed to a Visa Debit card) will be issued with a new cash card plus, which won’t enable cash withdrawals abroad.  Many expats and holidaymakers use the facility by transferring funds in before they go abroad, but these clients will now have to upgrade to the Visa-Debit version of the account, and use it as the place they have their salary or pension regularly paid in.
