Description:
Three weeks after storm Xynthia battered the Charente Maritime coastline, the Fédération Départementale de l’Hôtellerie de Plein Air de Charente Maritime (holiday park federation) has indicated that all is well for the start of the new tourist season.
They say that 99% of the department’s 350 camping and mobile home sites will be operational as planned, although the three (out of four) sites that were totally submerged on the coast at Aytré are unlikely to open in time for the summer. These sites may never be rebuilt if they are declared as being in a danger zone, according to new restrictions introduced by the government on building in flood zones.
The site at Clos Richelieu in Aytré will open partially, with many of the mobile homes situated on higher ground untouched by the tidal wave that swamped the coast. The Camping de la Plage was not so lucky however, and it was completely destroyed, and it was a similar story along at des Chalets de la plage, where all of the chalets were destroyed.
At La Couarde sur Mer, where campsites were the second worst hit in the department, reparations have been made quickly, with two of the four sites declared ready to accept visitors in perfect conditions. Idem at Châtelaillon-les Boucholeurs is working hard to make sure the site opens as soon as possible, whilst there are some sites that say they will definitely open, albeit with a few weeks delay.
