As widely predicted, Ségolène Royal was returned to office as president of Poitou-Charentes after the final round of voting was completed yesterday (Sunday).

She polled more than 60% of the vote, ahead of the UMP candidate and current transport secretary Dominique Bussereau, who received just over 39% of the vote.

The result was echoed all over France, with the ruling UMP party retaining just one region, the right-wing stronghold of Alsace.  This was the last major vote before the planned presidential election in 2012, and many feel that president Sarkozy will be more cautious in pushing through planned reforms going forward.

With unemployment in France now above three million, French people are dissatisfied with the president’s failure to deliver on election promises, and many favour a change in government.
