Description:
Citizens of Angoulême will be asked to turn of their lights for an hour on Saturday 27 March, as part of a global demonstration against climate change.
Between 20h30 and 21h30 the town will join over 200 towns in France, and some 88 countries worldwide in showing what can be done to combat climate change. Lights at many of the town’s public buildings such as the hôtel de ville, Saint-André church, the cathedral and the Musée d’Angoulême will be extinguished for one hour.
Earth Hour was started in Sydney, Australia in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses turned off their lights for an hour to make their stand against climate change. In 2008, the event had spread to 35 countries with over 50 million people participating. The world’s famous landmarks such as Toronto’s CN Tower, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and Rome’s Colosseum were all plunged into darkness.
