Description:
As peace seems to have broken out between Poitiers airport and low-cost carrier Ryanair, officials at Angouleme-Cognac airport look set to battle it out over a threat of reduced services.
Ryanair announced on Friday that it will launch a new route from Poitiers to Barcelona (Girona) in Spain, starting on 23 June 2010. The new route comes without an increase in financial contribution from the area, and represents good news after months of negotiations with the Irish company. The service will operate twice weekly on a Sunday and Wednesday, with average ticket prices said to be 32 euros.
There isn’t much cheer down the road at Angouleme-Cognac airport however, as Ryanair have said they want to reduce services on the London Stansted route. Services normally operate between April and October, in line with an agreement made in 2008, but Ryanair want to restrict services to July and August from 2010.
As with the situation at Poitiers, Ryanair asked for an increase in the financial contribution of the local area, something that led to an angry outburst from Charente president Michel Boutant back in December. The loss of Ryanair services could have consequences for employees at the airport, although the local chamber of commerce insists the future of the airport is not under threat, with or without the low-cost services of Ryanair. Negotiations are continuing.
