Top ten places in Poitou Charentes

30 January 2010

Description:

Since we launched Guide2PoitouCharentes in July 2008, we’ve been keeping score on which of our hundreds of place guides are the most popular.  In compiling a top ten, we found a few surprises, with places like Poitiers and Royan narrowly missing out in favour of some of the lesser known places.

We spent months researching hundreds of places in the region, bringing together key statistical data and details of the most important tourist attractions, the climate and more.  This is why we believe  Guide2PoitouCharentes.com is an important source of information for visitors and home-buyers alike, and the best English language website of its type for this region.

Here is our top-ten list of the most visited place guides:

1. Confolens (Charente) - It is perhaps no surprise that the North Charente town of Confolens features so highly, given that some 2,700 British expats have chosen to settle here (according to INSEE).

2. St Pierre d’Oleron (Charente Maritime) - The geographical and administrative centre of the Ile d’Oleron, the popular holiday island.

3. Ruffec (Charente) - Proximity to the Charente River, TGV access and location in beautiful North Charente could all be reasons why people are checking out Ruffec.

4. Thouars (Deux Sevres) - The northern frontier of Poitou Charentes, with interesting architecture and plenty of access to outdoor pursuits.

5. Montmorillon (Vienne) - This rural Vienne town is situated on the gorgeous Gartempe River, and like Confolens it is a popular home for British expats.

6. La Rochelle (Charente Maritime) - We’d have been stunned if La Rochelle wasn’t in this list, great transport links and a popular holiday destination.

7. Angoulême (Charente) - Administrative centre of Charente and home to a number of high profile festivals.

8. L’Isle Jourdain (Vienne) - Close to the Val de Vienne motor racing circuit and straddling the Vienne River, you can try bungee jumping here from the stunning viaduct.

9. Saintes (Charente Maritime) - Ancient market town with a Roman amphitheatre, and close to the coast.

10. Marennes (Charente Maritime) - Home of the famous oysters, and handy for many holiday attractions.
