Description:
The joint owners of Poitiers-Biard Airport have until 30 January to make up their mind on the latest offer from Ryanair, which could mean a reduction in existing services to London and Edinburgh, cancellation of the route to Birmingham, and an end to the hopes of a new route to Barcelona.
Talks have moved on since the Communauté d’agglomération of Poitiers (CAP) reacted furiously to the new demands of the Irish budget airline, when they steadfastly refused to meet the company’s demand for increased subsidy.
The CAP is one of three partners in the airport, with the Chamber of Commerce (CCI) and the Poitou Charentes regional council making up the group responsible for funding and running the airport. With the chamber of commerce keen to support the economic activity of Vienne and the regional council tempted by the prospect of new Spanish visitors to the Futuroscope theme park, the question is whether or not the CAP can find the extra money to cut a deal with Ryanair.
Failure to reach a compromise could have far reaching consequences for the airport and the region.
