Description:
According to recent data, the Poitou-Charentes region is one of the least affected places in France for flu-like symptoms.
Experts are struggling to come up with an explanation as to how the region has so far avoided the swine-flu epidemic, but they believe that this will only be a temporary reprieve, and that the vaccination programme needs to continue.
One theory is that the warmer climate, and in particular the mild autumn weather has prevented the spread of the virus in the region, although the fact that the Cote d’Azure has been highly affected perhaps counters this view. Another theory is that the lack of large urban areas with a high concentration of population could have proved beneficial in preventing the passing on of the virus.
You can keep track of the current position in France on the Sentinelles website, which offers a heat-map view in English on flu, asthma, gastro-enteritis and chicken-pox across France.
