French property prices stabilise, and Poitou Charentes is a favourite for prospective buyers

According to the latest figures from FNAIM, the association of French estate agents, property prices in France are beginning to stabilise, with prices falling more slowly in August.

Prices fell in August by 1.2%, but more slowly compared to July when the overall drop was 1.8%.  Compared to the same period in 2008, house prices have fallen by 8.9% overall, whilst the price of apartments has fallen more slowly at 7.9%

The FNAIM believe the figures prove that the property market in France is less volatile than that of its neighbours in the UK and Spain, with a spokesman saying 'French property has not been hit as badly by the global economic downturn as other countries.  Now prices are very much moving towards stabilisation.'

Mortgage brokers and property agents are starting to see a substantial increase in enquiries about French property, particularly from UK investors, with prospective property buyers feeling that prices are close to rock bottom.

This article by propertycommunity.com quotes a firm of mortgage brokers as saying that Poitou-Charentes is amongst the most popular regions with buyers, along with Dordogne and Brittany.
