Got soaked this summer? Get yourself a holiday home in Poitou Charentes

29 September 2009

Description:

It is widely accepted that, for the north of England and much of Scotland, this summer has been another wash-out.  Wave after wave of grey skies and heavy rain have left people feeling as though they have had no summer at all, and heading gloomily into the darker autumn months without the benefit of having had some much needed UV.

Whilst the south of England has hardly had a barbecue summer, people there at least have had a few glimpses of the big fiery thing in the sky, with the warmer more continental temperatures at least compensating for the lack of consistent sunshine most of us crave.

By contrast, Poitou-Charentes has had a quite beautiful spring and summer, and it usually gets a rather nice autumn, with warm days and cooler shortening evenings.  Temperatures in July and August were often of oven-melting proportions, often too hot for me, but just the type of weather that people fork out their hard-earned cash for, to buy a package holiday in Greece or somewhere similar.

This summer was better than last year, but to be honest we still had our fair share of sunshine in 2008 as I recall.  The year before wasn't too bad either, and when compared to the grey misery of the UK, it was almost a scorcher.

With all this great weather virtually on the UK's doorstep, and a wide range of cheap flights available for getting to the region, isn't this a great place to think about investing in?  Even if your budget doesn't stretch to a stately chateau, there are many great affordable properties on the market, which would make an ideal holiday home.

So what makes an ideal holiday home?  In my opinion, it needs to be modest in size, with a bit of a garden (not too much to maintain), within 1 hour of an airport with links to the UK, and near enough to stuff like interesting places and attractions.  Properties near the coast can be expensive, so inland properties with nearby access to a swimming lake would fit the bill nicely.  To be in or near a village or hamlet with some amenities would also be a bonus (unless you want a true rural idyll).

A property like this would not only offer you an escape for your holidays, but would probably give you a decent holiday rental income to help pay for itself over the longer term.  What are you waiting for?  Check out our property pages and see for yourself!
