Description:
Given that the Green party is fundamentally in favour of rail travel, as opposed to road travel, it has come as a bit of a surprise that the party has declared their opposition to the LGV Poitiers-Limoges project.
In an article in La Nouvelle Republique, Green representatives Robert Rochard, Christine Fraysse and Eric Joyaux have declared their opposition to the two-billion euro project, which is due to come into service in 2016. They claim the new line will not be profitable, and that it will degrade the landscape and heritage along the proposed route of the project.
Instead of a TGV service which would serve none of the towns and villages in between Poitiers and Limoges, they are calling for improvements to the regional TER network to better serve towns such as Lussac les Chateaux and Montmorillon. They also favour a return to the POLT project (Paris-Orleans-Limoges-Toulouse), which would deliver a high speed link between Paris and Limoges for a fraction of the cost.
