It sounds like an April-fool's story, but a new island has emerged over the last two years, near to the Cordouan lighthouse off the coast of Royan, according to France 3.
Vegetation has started to grow on the 100 hectare patch of sand, and it could provide an excellent insight for scientists looking at how life develops on a sandy and arid environment. It could also end up a haven for birds, although the arrival of yachtsmen in the summer may have put paid to any chance of that.
The question now is over who has jurisdiction over the island, so that steps can be taken to protect it.
