Description:
The recent spell of exceptionally hot weather in Poitou-Charentes looks set to continue for the next few days at least, with record temperatures recorded in Poitiers last weekend.
Last Saturday, Poitiers recorded 39.6C, equaling the record set during the 2003 heatwave, and away from the coast, much of the region was experiencing extreme heat. Temperatures have reached over 30C on a daily basis since 12 August, although this type of weather is nothing new for this time of year.
In Deux-Sèvres, Chizé recorded 37.5C last Saturday, whilst Niort reached 35.6C, Thouars was 36.5C, Bressuire and Melle received 35.4C, whilst Parthenay recorded a stifling 35C. The regional record temperature was set in the heatwave of 2003, when Niort reached an egg-frying 40.1C.
Surprisingly, these temperatures do not constitute a heatwave, because temperatures drop further during the night and early morning, giving cool relief compared to departments such as Dordogne and Rhone. Nightly temperatures typically drop to 17-18C compared to the 19-21C being experienced in heatwave zones.
Temperatures are expected to remain at 30C+ for the next couple of days, before storms are expected to bring welcome relief.
