More water restrictions in Poitou-Charentes as hot summer continues

Water resources in Poitou-Charentes have been hit by a dry winter and hot summer, and new restrictions have been put in place across the region's rivers as a result.

All departments have restrictions in force, with the worst hit being the Boutonne river in Saintonge, where the flow of the river has been reduced by over 50% from its normal summer rate of 800 litres per second, a serious reduction in water levels that could pose a threat to aquatic life on the river.

Experts believe the situation in Saintonge is worse than in 2006, with a combination of a drier winter and hot summer to blame.

There are restrictions in place across many rivers in the region that reduce the amount of water that farmers can take for irrigation, with a total ban being put on taking water from some rivers including the Bonnieure in Charente, where a new restriction was introduced this morning.
