Description:
It is a scenario repeated every year on the rest areas (aires de repos) of the autoroutes of France, but on Saturday night it was the turn of two British motorhomes to be burgled as the owners stopped for some much needed rest on the A10 autoroute in Poitou-Charentes.
Gendarmes are calling for vigilance after this incident in which two separate robberies occurred as the occupants slept. The vehicles were parked off the northbound A10 which runs between Bordeaux and Poitiers, in a rest area at Rouillé-Pamproux, Vienne.
The burglars forced the locks on the vehicles before making-off with video cameras, cameras and mobile phones, items that were all within easy reach. The robberies took place without disturbing those sleeping inside.
Gendarmes have increased patrols of motorway rest areas, and they are asking people to be vigilant especially during the peak holiday period. Their advice to those using the rest areas is to keep valuables hidden, even while they are in the vehicle.
Whilst these incidents happened in a rest area on a main motorway, many towns and villages have fully-equipped aires for motorhomes, and you can find out where these are located by clicking here.
