Description:
The archaeological park at Chassenon in Charente opened officially for the 2009 season last weekend, and launched its cultural programme for 2009.
The town named Cassinomagus is the place on which Chassenon was built, and the excavations stretch for almost 15 hectares. The attraction hopes to welcome between 45,000 and 50,000 visitors this year, even though excavations are ongoing.
The new team in charge of the site launched their 2009 cultural programme last Saturday, in the presence of Michel Boutant, president of the Charente General Council which has owned the site since 1994.
At the centre of the site are the famous Gallo-Roman baths, dating from the first century AD. For the first time, visitors will be able to view the baths as part of the wider town, with a theatre and temple also visible.
Excavation of the park has yet to be completed, and experts are excited at the prospect of further treasures being uncovered.
Cassinomagus is open until 15 November, with both free and guided visits available.
Check out the Cassinomagus website for further information (in English).
