Comic Strip Museum - Angoulême set to inaugurate Charente’s newest attraction

Angoulême's newest museum will be inaugurated this weekend, reaffirming the city's status as a true centre of comic strip excellence.

The new Comic Strip Museum, which is set to cost 9.7 million euros, has blended the new and old in architectural terms, transforming a row of XIX century wine storehouses on the banks of the Charente River and linking them to the remainder of the complex via a footbridge.

Work on the development was completed between January 2007 and March 2009, with funding coming from a combination of the EU, State, Region, and the mixed trade union Magelis.

Angoulême has a long tradition as a centre for comic strip, with the first Comic Strip Festival being hosted there in 1974.  The concept of the National Centre for Cartoon and Image (CNBDI) was announced in 1984, and in 1990 the impressive facility was inaugurated, housing a museum, library and centre for digital imagery.

This Saturday and Sunday will be the first time that the museum's full collection has been on view, with displays utilising all 1,300 sq m of floor space.  There will be key sections on the history of the cartoon, as well as workshops showing the various stages of creation.
