Description:
After Twenty years, the French RMI benefits programme has been replaced by the RSA, with the objective of helping the 'working poor', according to France 24.
Launched today, RSA (Revenu de solidarité active) will help an additional 1.8 million people, covering both the unemployed and those on low incomes.
Rates for unemployment are not expected to change, but those on low incomes will be able to top-up their low income with benefits for an indefinite period of time.
People who earn less than 880 euros per month can apply to the national fund for family allowances (Caisse Nationale d'Allocations Familiales) for the top-up allowances, which will change as income increases.
See the government website for some questions and answers about the new benefit system (French).
