French spend more time sleeping and eating, an OECD study reveals

05 May 2009

Description:

The French spend more time sleeping and eating than any of the other countries that form part of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), according to the latest edition of the study entitled 'Society at a glance.'

A special chapter in the latest report investigates leisure time in the 18 OECD countries, using data from surveys taken in 2006.  The surveys were taken from nationally representative samples of between 4,000 and 200,000 people, with the study findings being unveiled yesterday (4 May).

According to the data, the French spend an average of 8.8 hours under the duvet, and a whopping 2 hours 10 minutes at the dinner table, compared to 1 hour 20 minutes in the UK.

The report also reveals big differences in the amount of time men and women have for leisure, and crowns the Norwegians as kings of leisure time.  Turkey is declared the most sociable nation, spending 35% of time entertaining friends, but the survey also reveals a lack of time spent on exercise.
