Description:
For the first time in France, a deal has been struck between a local hypermarket, authorities and charities to give away fresh meat and dairy produce nearing its sell-by date, reports Sud-Ouest.
In a convention signed on Friday (3 April), Auchan Hypermarket in La Couronne, Charente, has been given the green light to give away fresh meat (excluding minced or chopped goods) and dairy produce within 1 day of expiry, to the food bank, for onward distribution to local associations and charities. The goods will be given out by the food bank at 10am each day.
The move comes as a boost to charities and associations, who say that their food stocks are dwindling, whilst the number of people in need is on the increase due to the recession. These goods would normally be thrown away, but for a 6 month trial period the prefecture has sanctioned the move, after rules covering health and food safety were satisfied.
