Description:
The botanical gardens in Poitiers were created in 1869 in the old gardens of the Hôtel-Dieu and cover approximately 1.5 ha. Here you can admire the grotto, ornamental lake, landscaped alleyways, mosaic-looking flower beds, and a collection of around 100 different trees and shrubs.
The botanical gardens were created by the professors of medicine for the students of the local university. Each flowerbed is hedged with small shrubs and all the plants are named and classed (aromatic, condiment, medicinal etc) for the public over the entire 4800sq.m. area.
The tropical glasshouse, rebuilt in 1994, is home to 150 different species.
