Geography and Transport

L'Isle d'Espagnac  is a small town (5.95km²)on the eastern side of the Departmental Capital Angouleme, at 38m to 120m altitude.  This locality makes for easy access to the mainline TGV service on the Bordeaux/Paris line.  The Airport is a short distance away in the direction of Brie/Champniers.  The proximity to Angouleme also means that access by road is good, with both the N10 and N147 close-by.

Climate

Climate here is Maritime, and therefore temperate with four clearly defined seasons.  Average Summer temperatures are between 24C to 27C (13C-15C night), and in Winter this drops to 9C to 10C (3C night).  As with much of Poitou Charentes, the Autumn can be warm, with average temperatures in Sept of 23C and Oct 19C.  The months of October and November are usually the wettest.   L'isle d'Espagnac is part of a zone which receives over 2000 hours of sunshine per year.

Being part of Greater Angouleme, L'Isle d'Espagnac has easy access to all of the amenities of the City, such as shopping, tourist sites and facilities. 

Economy

Key businesses in the town are Schneider Electric (Global Company), and DC Distribution.   L'isle d'Espagnac is part of the Angouleme economic zone, which has an unemployment rate of 9.7%, compared against the regional rate of 8.6% and the national rate of 9.1% (INSEE 2006).

L'isle d'Espagnac has some amenities, any others required can be found in close by Angouleme. The nearest swimming pool is at Saint Yriex sur Charente (4km), and the nearest cinema is at Angouleme.

Education

There is a choice of 2 State Nurseries and 2 Primary schools, no High School (College) or College (Lycee). However there are numerous option in near by Angouleme (4km).

Key Stats

95.2% of properties here are classed as main homes, with 1.4% classed as second homes.  There are more females than males resident here (52.6%), and there are more people aged 60 or over than the national average (30.2% vs 21.3%). The number of retired people is also higher (27.2% vs 18.2%).  The percentage of people below the age of 19 is lower than the national average (20.7% vs 24.6%)
