Ten British foods I miss like mad

Whilst I love the fresh food available here in Poitou-Charentes, there are times when my body seems to crave stuff that British residents take for granted.  Some things you just can't get here, and some which are displayed in the tiny ‘British food section' of the supermarket which would be more aptly titled ‘daylight robbery section.'  The ‘range' of goods on offer hardly sets hearts racing (spam anyone?), and frankly I don't know if supermarket managers are privately having a giggle at us desperate Brits.

Compiling this list had me drooling and whimpering like a hungry dog.  It took me some time to arrive at my own top-ten, because at each item I seemed to drift away, almost able to taste the items in question.  Anyway, grab some tissues to mop up the saliva, and check out the list of what I miss the most:

1. Cheddar Cheese - The French are luke-warm on this British favourite, but we can't get enough of it, the stronger the better!  You can keep your Roquefort!

2. Cadburys Chocolate - This is the best chocolate in the world.  Milka, Toblerone and Lindt simply do not compare.  Don't even think about comparing it with the imposter you can buy from Nestle.  Only Cadbury's will do.  Preferably a Dairy Milk the size of a mattress!

3. Bacon - Who do the French think they are kidding.  Bacon is not circular, and is not paper-thin.  It is almost guitar-shaped and requires more than 10 seconds in the pan.  The edges should go crispy, and it should be served on thick sliced white bread....

4. Takeaways - If I had a euro for every time someone has muttered ‘I could murder a decent takeaway' I'd be a rich man indeed.  Unhealthy, full of additives and sugars, and invented for the downright lazy amongst us, but sometimes, just sometimes....

5. Walkers crisps - Cheese and onion to be precise.  This flavour has been attempted here, with credible results, but none can match Gary Lineker's favourite.

6. Baked Beans - The local equivalent product has a label that translates as "baked beans in dirty dishwater."  It's missing that thick tomatoey sauce like you find in Heinz or even popular supermarket brands.

7. Proper bread - I like fresh crusty baguettes, but there are times when a decent thick sliced loaf of white bread is required.  You can buy ‘recette Anglais' here, but it is ridiculously priced, and nothing like a decent Hovis or Warburtons.

8. Real Ale - Why don't the French go for proper beer?  Why is it that only lager or white (wheat) beer is available in the local bars?  While I am not a big beer drinker, there are times that a pint of Snecklifter, Old Peculiar or Speckled Hen would go down a treat.

9. Crackers for Cheese - We served up a selection of crackers to our French neighbours recently, and they didn't really know what to do with them.  Certainly, the Scottish Oatcakes drew puzzled looks.  "Aren't oats for horses?" one person offered.  Another used one as a coaster.  Philistines!

10. Branston Pickle - Chutney schmutney!  There's nothing out there to beat the ‘small-chunk' version of this British classic, home-made or not.  A perfect partner to the aforementioned cheddar cheese.

When the new asparagus arrives in the local market or shop I am in heaven and I love eating locally produced seasonal foods but just occasionally I long for the treat of an out of season asparagus or an exotic vegetable such as pak choi or lemon grass. I also miss occasionally eaten basics such as pork pies, pickled onions, piccalili, flavoured cottage cheese, double cream that whips, malt vinegar.....

I just thought I would catch up with what everyone is missing, and I can't believe how many things I had forgotten about. I could write a list of 50 things I miss after reading everyone else's list. I also agree with performing bear, only us brits could come up with such a fantastic list of things we miss!!

Well, I just cannot believe we're living in the centre of 'goose' country, having always had roast goose on Christmas Day since we married in 1981, and the size of the duck breasts here - just wonderful! However, the question (to win a hamper, how great is that?) name top ten British foods that we miss. Difficult as we seem to be able to obtain quite a lot of stuff locally but here goes: 1)Lapsang Souchong Tea (no, we're not posh but just love the smokiness of it and it works so well on a hot sunny day or cold damp night) (2) Marmite (I love it, husband hates it) (3) Sandwich Spread (4) Spiced Chutneys, such as 'lime'. (5) Good Chinese Takeaway (we lived close to a really excellent Schzuan one in UK and my tastebuds get going just thinking about it) (6) Hot Mint Jelly (7) Hot Horseradish Sauce (8) Yea, I'd go along with the lady who suggested Paul Newman's dressings (9) Chunky Peanut Butter (doesn't have to be low fat!!) (10) Plain Chocolate Digestive biscuits. Close to us, in Devon, we had one of the first undercover market outlets which then became a sort of superstore for local produce - called Dart's Farm, near Exeter and I would really like to use the Tardis machine and move them to the Charente. Bonne journee

Oh, gosh, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and a good british Chinese pancake roll, also hoi sin sauce to go with beautiful french duck oh yes and those lovely thin pancakes to put the duck in with the hoi sin sauce....Mmmmm, now what else, oh yes, good back bacon - smoked with chewy rind, um...and solid coconut bar to make those scrummy Korma curries, garam masala to add to the flavour of that lovely curry too.....pork scratchings (although my dentist would disagree as he has to fix all my teeth afterwards).....sugar free wine gums (as I am diabetic) I can eat those till I look like a wine gum.....McVities digestives, in Chocolate/no chocolate/light/ and however else they come, and of course Rich Tea biccys, just perfect for my cup of char in the afternoon(finger version even better as you can eat more of them allegedly)...A good Bombay mix would be another, but I will stop there in fear of going on to much.....

There is quite a lot of things i have a hankering for from time to time - fortunately regular visits from my parents with my huge shopping request in tow helps curb the cravings, but here's mine Fish and chips - especially those days i cant be bothered to cook Salt and Vinegar square crisps or chipsticks Pork Scratchings Chocolate - namely Flakes, crunchies and a huge pot of Roses Piccallili Picled onions - the eye watering kind Mature Chedder cheese (whilst have found a source of some incredible chedder cheese, its hideously expensive) Diet Irn Bru Pies, pasties and more pies Crispy Aromatic Duck pancakes ...and lots more. Looking at the above list its no wonder I always come back from my trips to Britain feeling ill and a stone heavier as I do tend to cram in as much as possible.

This is a hard one but I have to say Digestive biscuits to dunk in my PG tips! Followed by horseradish sauce to go with my roast beef and thick double cream for the apple crumble, oh that sounds good. For christmas dinner a few christmas crackers would look nice on the table with a big plump crispy turkey....

Londoners Pie Mash and Green Liquor, Proper Indian Takeaway, Marks & Spencers Chocolate Swiss Roll with Buttercream Filling, Raspberry Ruffles, Mint Aero, Ring Doughnuts, Crumpets, Real Puff Pastry, Real Double and Clotted Creams and if there has to be only 10 - Cornish Wafers. I feel so hungry now, I could almost go for an Andouillette - maybe not!

As i still live in england it is difficult to come up with 10 foods i would miss as i`ve never had to go without some of my fav`s for that long, but i agree with performing bear on a few. So, in no particular order CHEDDAR CHEESE mature, long lasting flavour. Forget the crackers, just the cheese washed down with a can of Speckled Hen. Unfortunatley the ale dilutes the taste of the cheese, but what the heck, have another piece i`ve got a fridge full. REAL ALE No-one makes real beer like the english ( unless you know different ). No matter what your palate you will find one to suit, or enjoy looking for it. Recently found a corker ( no pun intended ) made by York Brewery called Centurian Ghost, black like guiness but mild, goes down a treat. Has very high alc content & have only managed two in a single sitting. CHOCOLATE Yes it must be Cadbury`s, milk, fruit & nut or whole nut , best in the world ( unless you know better ). BEANS Not a huge bean eater but the wife is. An essential. That lovely thick tomato sauce, goes with anything. NESCAFE LATTE Got to have my daily fix, especialy if bought as a special offer "BOGOF" BOURBON CREAMS The DADDY of the dunker, i think they put something in them to make you want more, got to be dunked in tea though. TAKE AWAYS Just had chicken korma last night, that lovely creamy sauce, breast of chicken. Too much to eat as usual so had to throw some out! What about cod & chips, the lovley crisp batter, with chip shop vinegar ( can you smell it? ). I live 500 yards from fishy, indians, chinese and real ale pub. That`s all i can think of but if i was in your shoes one or two more may spring to mind. Happy dreaming.
