Tell us your favourite restaurant in Poitou Charentes

Poitou-Charentes has no fewer than six Michelin starred restaurants within its boundary, including the two-starred restaurant of Richard and Christopher Coutanceau, overlooking the harbour in La Rochelle.

In the course of our duties we have sampled none of these, primarily because you need a bank-loan if you're taking the family.  But, we have had some really good inexpensive food at places we've more or less stumbled upon, and we think there are some gems out there waiting to be discovered.

We're relying on you to give us some hints and tips on the best restaurants you have been to in the region.  Whether you live here or have recently taken a holiday here, we want to hear about your experiences.

Tell us the name of the establishment, where it is and why it was so good.

Hi.
I've already talked about 'The Charentaise' but, value for money you can't beat 'Francine' which is located inside the main Geant complex at Gond Pontouvre. The frontage shows Chinese food on offer as take away to cook, or is already cooked. Behing that is a tiny restaurant for maximum 20 people. They specialise in Vietnamese/Chinese food and they obviously have a fabulous chef as the flavours are just out of this world. It's euros 9,00 for three courses and euros 6,00 for two. We've been there three times recently, now greeted as old friends, and the food just seems to get better. A great place to rest those feet in the middle of a shopping spree. They do speak English (french, german and Vietnamese!).

'La Charentaise' Hotel, just south of Ruffec on the side of the N10 (villegats turn-off but you can see it from the road). Taken over this year by an irish family who have refurbished throughout and the food is reasonable and excellent. We often pop-in for a glass of Guiness and an 'Assiette' which is a plate of nibbles - usually pancake rolls breaded mushrooms battered onions fried prawns or whatever happens to be around) with dipping sauces. Euros 6 but they do plates for up to four people and the price goes down, the more people there are - if you see what I mean. We haven't had a main meal there yet but friends tell me that the food is superb.

Les Paralleles in La Palmyre, where all the tables have a hot plate where you cook your own food 'plancha' style. When I was there recently they bought out a huge plate of cut meats and vegetables. It was great fun and unlike anything I've seen in the UK (health and safety would probably get in the way). The only downside, because of the hotplates, it was getting very warm in the restaurant by the end of the night.

Whilst I haven't been to either La Guinguette or Restaurant 15, they both sound well worth a visit, so thank you for the advice! I have visited Au Grain de Sel in La Palmyre and I agree with Darcy that you can get a really nice and reasonably priced lunch there, while you watch the world pass by from the terrace.

Thanks to those who have contributed so far.

I would like to recommend 'Restaurant 15' in Luche sur Brioux near Chef Boutonne which is run by Alan & Elaine. Excellent food, I recommend the fish & Chips. There is a superb range of French cuisine and Alan also makes great Indian & Chinese curries!! There is also a 'take away' service.

We had a terrific lunch at Au Grain de Sel in La Palmyre this summer. They did a set menu for 12 euro, and we had a gorgeous salad and then a steak and chips (served with some kind of savoury ice cream). The chocolate tart for desert was to die for. The kids meals were huge, and they cost 7 euro. Well wortha visit if you are in the area.

This is a good idea,I would like to recomend "La Guinguette" St.Germain de Confolens, just outside Confolens,it was taken over a couple months ago, they have a good range of food and are very friendly, good French food and also international dishes to,very adaptable to your needs. They have now opened a new winter restaurant which is cosy and serving venison and wild boar, amongst other things.
The hosts are welcoming and always helpful. It had a cosy friendly atmosphere.
